HIV 1 & 2

P24 Ag Test

One characteristic of HIV antigen is a viral protein known as p24; HIV viral core is the makeup of this structural protein. p24 is present in very high levels in the blood serum of the newly infected person during the brief period between infection and seroconversion; doing p24 antigen assays helps diagnose primary HIV infection. Antibodies to p24 are produced during seroconversion, diagnosing p24 antigen untraceable after seroconversion in most cases. Therefore, p24 antigen assays are not dependable for diagnosing HIV infection after its initial stages. However, HIV infection can be reliably diagnosed earlier with combined antibody or antigen tests than with only antibody-detecting tests. The fourth-generation antibody or antigen tests are now the standard screening test in most countries.

Early detection of HIV leads to early treatment, but the test which can detect one virus will not be able to detect others as almost 55% of the genetic makeup is different. Tests that can differentiate between both types are available and very effective and can help identify the type of HIV infection.
